Jonathan Edwards, Pearl Jam and Serendipity
This used to be my Christian worldview...
I was thinking about Jonathan Edwards' picture of his angry god the other day...it just popped into my head.
At that very moment, one of my favorite songs, Pearl Jam's "Rearviewmirror," started playing on the radio.
Ever had one of those moments?
If you don't know the song, here it is (with lyrics below)...
I took a drive today,
Time to emancipate,
I guess it was the beatings made me wise.
But I'm not about to give thanks, or apologize.
I couldn't breathe, holdin' me down,
Hand on my face, pushed to the ground,
Enmity gauged, united by fear,
Forced to endure what I could not forgive...
I seem to look away,
Wounds in the mirror waved,
It wasn't my surface most defiled.
Head at your feet, fool to your crown,
Fist on my plate, swallowed it down,
Enmity gauged, united by fear,
Tried to endure what I could not forgive...
Saw things
Saw things
Saw things
Saw things...
Clearer
Clearer...
Once you, were in my...
REARVIEWMIRROR
I gather speed from you f@#$ing with me.
Once and for all, I'm far away,
I hardly believe, finally the shades...are raised...
Couldn't have said it better myself.
So...ever had one of those moment?
Grace and Peace,
Raffi

If the clip was supposed to be of Jonathan Edwards, it misrepresented Edwards' preaching style. Edwards preached in an almost inaudible monotone and not at all like his words invite us to mimic bombast. This was one of the things that made the "Great Awakening" so obviously a work of the Holy Spirit. No bombast. No yelling or screaming hellfire and damnation. Just the words of truth sent home to the listeners' hearts by the Holy Spirit.
It is the goodness of God that leads men to repentance. Worked for me anyway.
